The Oak and the Reeds 樫の木と葦

A long time ago, there was an oak and some reeds by a river.
昔、川のそばに樫の木と葦が生えていました

The oak was strong and hard. But the reeds were weak and soft.
樫の木は強くて固かった。でも葦は弱くて柔らかだった。


One day there was a big storm. The reeds bent low. But the oak kept
ある日、大きな嵐がやってきた。葦は低くかがんだ。しかし樫の木は真っ直ぐ

standing straight. "I'm strong. I don't want to bend. I must fight."
立っていた。"僕は強い。かがむなんて嫌だ戦わなくっちゃ”

The wind got stronger. The reeds bent lower. But the oak kept standing straight.
風はますますつよくなった。葦はもっと低くかがんだ。しかし樫の木はまだ真っ直ぐ立っていた。

I don't want to bend like the reeds.
葦のようにかがみたくない。


The wind got stronger and stronger. The oak still fought against the wind.
風はもっともっとつよくなった。樫の木はまだ風に向かって戦っていた

"I must keep fighting."
"戦い続けなくっちゃ"


But the wind was too strong, and the oak broke in half. Snap! "Oh no!"
しかし風はとても強くなって樫の木は真っ二つに折れてしまった。ぼきっ　”あー”

Thud! "I lost the fight," said the oak.
バン　"戦いに負けてしまった”と樫の木が言った。

After the storm the oak said, "Reeds, you're not strong but you are all right.
嵐の後樫の木が言った。"葦さん君たちは強くないのにみんな大丈夫だね。

Tell me why."
なぜなんだ”

The reeds answered, "Because we do not fight."
葦は答えていった。"戦わなかったからだよ"

Better bend than break.
折れるよりは曲がった方がまし

友人が
「のれんになりなさい・柳になりなさい」とよく言ってくれました。
ポッキと折れてしまわないための知恵ですね。
なくなった祖母に教えて貰った戦略
「負けて勝て」
それも戦わない勝ち方です。
葦の生き方に学ぶでした。
